Antibiotics - Are they a good idea for someone on hospice?

Recently my mom got really sick and hospice did not think that she was going to make it.  They put her on critical care watch and I made funeral arrangements.  However after about 4 days my mom pulled through.  During this time I noticed that hospice was giving her several medicines and antibiotics.  My mom has made it clear that she does not want extraordinary measures taken to keep her alive.  Since this incident we have asked hospice to discontinue administering antibiotics if she gets like this again.  My mom has been fighting this illness for so long and she is really tired.  I hope that she continues to do well...especially since my wife and I are expecting our first child this summer which would be my moms first grandchild.

Antibiotics normally shouldn't have any ill effect on a patient. There are instances where the antibiotic isn't working or where the virus has mutated and is immune to the antibiotics. There are certain antibiotics that people are allergic to like penicillin. That could be the case. I'd talk with her doctor about whether she was reacting to the antibiotics in an adverse way.

Hospice is a type of care and a philosophy of care  which focuses on the critical situation of a terminally ill patient's symptoms. At these centers they take a special care and gave friendly environment to the patient, They use many medicines and some antibiotics, as these antibiotics are basic needs during any treatment and doesn't have any side effect as far as i know.

I've learned from a booklet given out by Hospice in FL, that was written by a pastor who is intimately involved with the elderly and nursing homes, that you may NOT want to have antibiotics administered. They often prolong a life that's ready to end. They are not, it seems, required for comfort measures.

These antibiotics shouldn't really have a bad effect in your mom's health and instead keep her better.  But if such isn't the case then you must talk with her doctor about this.

Antiobitics don't have a harmful effect on your mom but since she requested she doesn't want to receive these drugs anymore then you should give strict orders to the attending physician or her caregiver not to give her antibiotics anymore. I'm pretty sure they will respect that.
