I just got a letter in t he mail that they will be raising the private pay rates at the nursing home again  Angry.  This is the last straw as they raised rates less than a year ago.  I am now looking for a new home for my mom.  I will keep everyone posted on our progress but I hope to have her moved by the end of the month.

I am going to visit a more economical home this weekend.  It is a little further from my house than the current one but it is much more affordable and appears to have a higher rating on the medicare site.

So I visited the first home on my list today and it went pretty well. The facility is undergoing renovation and is owned by a young couple. My only concern is that they will raise rates once the renovation is complete.  I am going to see if I can negotiate locking in the current rate for a year.  This will save us some decent money and also give me enough time to get another rental property to take care of expenses.

Well I spoke with someone at our current facility and they were unwilling to negotiate a lower rate so we will definitely be moving my mom by the end of the month.  There are over 125 nursing home in a 50 mile radius from our house so you would think they would be more flexible and try to keep our business.  Oh well they only have 2 stars and my mom is not happy with her roommate any way.  I hope to get things in motion with the other home on our list tomorrow.

So the administrator at the current home contacted us today and said they are willing to delay their price increase until January now that they know we are serious about moving my mom.  Too little too late.  I am going to check out a "residential home" on Friday.  This is an actual house that was recommended by our hospice social worker.  I think my mom would like this type of environment so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  If this does not work out we will send her to the home I toured last week.

Success!  Today we moved my mom to the new facility. Like I mentioned earlier this is an actual house so I am really optimistic that this will be a much better environment for my mom.  She will get to eat salads again which she loves and from what the social worker has told me she will get much better care.  Keep your fingers crossed that everything works out.

I visited with my mom this morning and she seems to be adjusting well to her new location.  She was very alert and was in good spirits so we had a really good conversation.  I am very optimistic that this will work out much better than her previous nursing home.  She was very excited to be getting fresh salads again which was something she could not get before.
