Before being admitted to a nursing home, my mom used home health care for over 15 years.  While fairly reliable most of the time I have quite a few horror stories that I will share.    The first incident that comes to mind is the time that a home health care aid robbed my parents.  She stole my mother's wedding ring, power tools, lawn mower, etc.  Obviously she was caught but my Dad was never able to recover my mom's wedding ring.  He looked for it at several pawn shops throughout the city with no luck.

I also remember several times when the home health care aid did not show up and either my dad or I would have to leave work and come home and take care of my mom.

From my experience with home health care the aides are not always reliable either.  Some days they would just not show up.

maybe they aren't as reliable but in my opinoun the individual care probably keeps some people healthier longer.  it may not be good for all though because in a group setting there is more interaction with others esp for those who are home bound. do you think with any of the expected health care reform there will be an changes in long term care?

Home health care is the fastest-growing expense in the Medicare program because of the aging population, the increasing prevalence of chronic disease and increasing hospital costs. Patients and families are choosing the option of home care more frequently.

Home Health care is an option most individuals should consider first before a nursing home.  It really depends on how ill the person is.  I believe home care aides are not medically qualified and therefore not allowed to handle medical aspects of it.  They cook, clean, laundry, grocery shop, accompany to appointments, give companionship and remind their patient to take their meds.  Home care lets the patient continue to live in his/her familiar surroundings, friends/family and will have one-to-one care.  At a nursing home, you may not get the attention you need or desire.  How about we start a new topic called:  How you should prepare for your loved one's home care.

I think home health care gives the elderly more freedom and a better way of life than having to resort to a nursing home. While I think there are many great nursing homes, many elderly are not ready to live in a nursing home and home health care gives them that choice. With that said, I think it's important to research the home health care companies extensively and make sure you monitor your elderly relative and their home health care worker on a regular basis to make sure everything is going fine.

The students' experiences are an important part of the class. Sharing their stories and tips on dealing with issues are an integral part of the learning process, especially given the difficult questions asked. She said the class bonded quickly, and the shared experiences helped everyone understand the struggles of home health care.

I owe so much to Jeremy Wayman, my physical therapist! When I came home after a month in the Hospital I could not walk at all. Thanks to his patience, encouragement, and progressive exercises, I fairly quickly went from a walker to a cane and then to walking independently. I couldn't believe it! His exercises were not only for mobility and strengthening but also for balance. Everytime he walked in my door he was like a ray of sunshine....always "up." Such a great personality! I was really sad when our time was over. Although I continue to do just fine, I miss him as a friend.

I started thinking about what type of work I could do from home and then I realized I could use my talents as a nurse educator. I am certified as a childbirth and breastfeeding educator. I am also a prenatal nurse author and consultant

The inner ear has the hearing nerve; any damage to its microscopic endings can cause tinnitus. This is the most common cause of tinnitus.

If a parent needs skilled, medical care everyday it is really a challenge. Our acute care system is made up of going to the doctor, and going to the hospital.

Hi everyone! It’s really a nice thread where people are sharing their health care experiences. I think choosing a nursing home or care home purely depends on his/her needs. if Someone think that he is not that much physically frail or not having any serious kind of disease then that person will not think about nursing homes first definitely as he would like to home care services at his own home but nursing care Home services are the only option for those people who are having serious kind of diseases and who requires proper medical care for them. Such people can not live independently and even it’s not easy for family members to give them high quality medical care at home.
